On March 14th, Fast Technology announced that today, American chip startup Cerebras Systems has launched the world's strongest third-generation wafer level AI acceleration chip, WSE-3 (Wafer Scale Engine 3).

It is reported that under the same power consumption and price, the performance of WSE-3 is twice that of the previous world record holder Cerebras WSE-2.

The company claims that the WSE-3 chip is built specifically for training the industry's largest AI model, using TSMC's 5-nanometer process. It contains an astonishing 4 trillion transistors, 900000 AI cores, a cache capacity of 44GB, and external storage of 1.5TB, 12TB, or 1.2PB.

The performance has also achieved a leap, with a peak AI computing power of 125PFlops, which is 1.25 billion floating-point calculations per second, comparable to top-level supercomputing.

When introducing the performance parameters of the WSE-3 chip, Cerebras Systems compared this product comprehensively to the Nvidia H100. The company's introduction page shows that in terms of artificial intelligence training acceleration, the performance of this chip is 8 times that of the H100.

Cerebras Systems is well-known in the industry for its unconventional style. While other manufacturers are still dividing wafers into hundreds of independent chips, WES chose to directly turn the entire wafer into one chip.

This has led to the WSE-3 chip having a single chip area of approximately 46225 square millimeters, which is more than 50 times the typical chip area and larger than the area of a book.
